Sarge
Sarge came to the shelter with his brother (Pipsqueek) in January 2009. They came with their registration papers so we know they came from a puppy mill/back yard breeder. Sarge (now Spike) and his brother both had a serious skin problem. They flaked more than they shed! We started by treating them nutritionally, good food, eggs and oil for healthy coat. They were both adopted. Sarge came back, however. The person who adopted him didn't count on his skin problem making her allergies act up... she broke out in hives every time he came near. So he came back. We tested him for mange mites and treated him even though the test was negative. We treated him for every type of internal parasite as sometimes those can affect the skin. Once we exhausted those options, we are back to nutritional. He is eating IAMS Veterinary Formula Skin and Coat and taking Skin Formula 3V Capsules (a concentrated dietary supplement containing fish oil for Omega 3 fatty acids and Vitamins A, D and E) every day. He also gets moisturizing baths every week. His skin seems to be getting better, we shall see. Why is Spike a success story? Because he adopted me.
Scooter
Scooter, is now Bella. She was brought to us unable to use her left rear leg and limited use of her right rear leg. We were told she was a regular puppy, was sold to a family and three days later the family brougt her back and she couldn't walk. They gave no explanation. We were able to get an x-ray donated by Cedar Valley Vet (Dr. Kenyon) and several days of medication and boarding from Jesup Vet. Nothing seemed to help. Scooter/Bella was featured on KWWL to increase awareness of her situation and hopefully draw donations towards her care. It not only brought donations, but also a new family! She was adopted by a physical therapist who brought her to work with her at the rehabilitation center. Bella got whirlpool baths and a special walker to help her build strength in her rear end. She is now a very happy dog living in the Waterloo area with several other doggie siblings. She gets to play therapy dog at the rehab center, encouraging the residents there to keep trying. Bella is a real success story!
