Be on the LOOK OUT! -- Thursday March 11th, 2010
URGENT: PLEASE FORWARD:
I am writing to let you know that there is a LARGE group of bunchers working from the
Hibbing-Virginia area down through Duluth-Mid Minnesota-mid Wisconsin.I have not only
spoken with many people who have had their pets stolen from their fenced yards, taken off
tie-outs, and one brave enough to run up to a man's porch in broad daylight and try to
steal his Dachund. Luckily, he lived by a 4 way stop, and ran into the street in front of
the cars. When he yelled "What are you doing with my dog" the woman threw her out of the
window to the pavement and said "We thought she was lost" then took off before he could
get a licence number. Note: A woman was driving and she had a 9 or 10 year old girl run
for her.Unfortunately, I was an intended target as well. I'd noticed a blue truck with a
topper and a sort of loud muffler going slowly past my fenced yard off and on for the last
three weeks. Last week one of the guys (there were 2 men) got out by my side fence and
bent down to call the dogs-luckily I was standing at the door and was out there like a
shot.Needless to say, they took off. Four nights ago, just at dusk, I heard that truck
again. This time they pulled up the the front fence (so all I could see was the side of
the truck-no plates). Two of my dogs were out. The guy in the passenger side jumped out
and was at my fence in a second, bent down and calling "come here puppy want this come
here.." Again, luckily I've been keeping an Eagle Eye on my dogs. I ran out and called
Baily (he was closest) and at the same time screamed "What the hell are you doing"...well
he was in the truck and gone in 2 seconds. The next day, Dan was out in back by the
garage, and Mason trotted up to him! We couldn't figure out how in the world he'd gotten
out, until Dan checked the fence. The spot where this dog thief was squatting the night
before had used wire cutters to snip several pieces of our fence wire...just enough to
reach in and grab the dogs. Please be advised that there has also been a report of a dark
haired woman in a coupe-like red car who has been spotted doing the same thing. God knows
how many there are and how many vehicles are being used. PLEASE use caution when letting
your dogs out. Mine will never go out alone again!

Lucy Goes Home! -- Tuesday March 9th, 2010
We are so thrilled that Lucy found her new home! Her new parents drove 14 hours ONE WAY from Fort Worth Texas to come pick up their new family member. She made a great impression in the house here by peeing on the floor and then once they got her in the car, she proceeded to jump into the front seat and spill their pop all over... yet they STILL wanted her! :) She will be a challenge but they were looking forward to having her home. Thank You Moonen Family!!

Meeting for Building -- Monday February 15th, 2010
Please support the Waverly Humane Society this Thursday at the Parks and Rec Committee meeting to be held at Waverly City Hall at 7pm in the Council Chambers.
The humane shelter is proposed to be in an existing park building, south of the fire station and in a U-1 zoned area, which is “Environmentally Sensitive Area”. This area is prone to flooding and as such, the zoning designation is restrictive to structures and uses. In accordance with City Code, one may utilize an existing structure in the U-1 for a public agency (Definition from internet: maintained at the expense of, serving, or for the use of a community a public library) use. Whether the proposed humane society use will be conducted by a “public agency” or not may be debatable as it is not funded by taxpayer dollars. But, I believe this use is a public agency use as it relies on charitable donations, grants and other sources of funding in addition to nominal operating fees for expenses to serve the entire public in the name of domestic animal care.
The process would have to follow Section 100.18.03 of City Code, which specifies this go before the planning and zoning commission (P&Z) for review and approval by City Council. Because this use would generate sound (barking/other animal sounds), more traffic (would require a paved parking area no less than 1,000 square feet in size), and potential lighting concerns (if added), a public hearing may be requested to be similar to the process for other “special provisional uses” found in “Residential” zoned neighborhoods by the Planning and Zoning Commission. I anticipate the neighbors across the street would be interested in this proposal. In sum, the meetings would be:
1. P&Z meeting to set public hearing, look at proposed site plan addressing the above requirements.
2. Public hearing at next regular P&Z meeting (next month).
3. City Council meeting for final decision.

Trap, neuter, return catching on for stray cats
More than 250 programs are now operating nationwide for feral felines
updated 24 minutes ago
Stepping onto the back porch of Suzanne Des Marais's row house in Washington, D.C., a visitor might be skeptical about the colony of feral cats she supposedly feeds.
There isn't a feline in sight, until she points to a pair of yellow eyes peeking between boards at the top of a fence. The black cat keeps its distance, apparently alone, then she picks up food dishes and suddenly three cats are watching from the next yard.
"They know the sounds, like the clanging of the dishes," Des Marais says.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
These are authentic alley cats — an alley runs past her backyard gate — but they're far from the raggedy specimens the term brings to mind. And Des Marais's loving care of her "regulars" stretches well beyond food.
Des Marais is a volunteer advocate of the Trap-Neuter-Return approach to managing stray cats. The tips are missing from the left ears of those she feeds, identifying them as cats that have already been captured and returned to their home territory, with vaccinations thrown in as well.
The approach, known as TNR, used to be close to an underground movement but is now standard policy for major animal welfare organizations like the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the Humane Society of the United States. More than 250 nonprofit TNR organizations operate nationwide.
The District of Columbia has about 400 cat colonies with almost 2,000 cats that have been spayed, neutered and vaccinated by the CatNiPP program of the Washington Humane Society, says program director Bridget Speiser.
Many not adoptable
Neighbors are often skeptical at first: Why trap the cats and then put them back instead of finding them homes?
The TNR programs generally do try to adopt out friendly strays. But true feral cats, born and bred on the streets, missed out on a crucial period in their lives (before about 8 weeks of age) to become socialized to humans, according to cat advocacy organization Alley Cat Allies.
While some might become accustomed to living with people after a long period of adjustment, shelters don't have the resources to rehabilitate them. With so many adoptable cats already looking for homes, the result is that stray cats brought to shelters join millions that are euthanized each year.
Sadly, that doesn't eliminate the original problem due to what's called the vacuum effect: The vacated cat habitat simply attracts more cats, and you're right back where you started.
In contrast, the TNR strategy has been shown to reduce stray cat numbers. Because cats are territorial, new cats rarely move in to a managed colony. Because they are neutered, no kittens are produced, and nuisance behaviors are reduced as well.
Fewer stray cats
In Newburyport, Mass., for instance, about 300 cats lived along the Merrimack River. An exterminator was brought in to remove a group of 30, but within two years they had been replaced by 30 more. When a TNR program was started in 1992, the numbers began to decline. There's just one cat left, a senior named Zorro.
"He gets sardines every Sunday," says Stacy LeBaron, president of the Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society.
Jenny Schlueter of the Tree House Humane Society in Chicago says it's important for a community to understand that stray cats would be there even if no one fed them.
"These cats are not created because the person fed them. The person fed them because they were there," she says. Without TNR, "they'd still be there but they would be sickly, they would be fighting, they would be knocking over your trash can."
Des Marais sees signs of health among her feline crowd. There's a tabby she calls Target whose thick coat has a rich sheen. "Once they eat regularly, they just look so different," she says.
Advocates differ on goals
Rescue advocates differ, however, on whether the ultimate goal is for all cats to live indoors, or to accept that stray cats will always be with us.
In Newburyport, LeBaron says, it was critical that an effort to get all pet cats neutered was under way, but it's unclear whether that approach could be scaled up to work in a larger community.
All agree that without dedicated volunteers like Des Marais, there'd be no TNR.
"I don't even call them feral cats, I call them community cats, " says Cimeron Morrissey of the Homeless Cat Network in San Francisco. "Feral cats are no one's responsibility, so therefore they're everyone's responsibility. People have to step up and do the right thing."

Kitten with Broken Leg -- Sunday September 20th, 2009
On Friday we recieved a kitten who was not using her rear left leg. Our vet in Oelwein graciously donated an x-ray and we found the leg to be broken. Lucky, as we have named her, otherwise seems to be a healthy kitten. If her leg does not begin to heal on it's own, we may need to do surgery. Donations will be welcome to help us defer the costs for the rehabilitation of this wee kitten. Thanks!

Shelter Press Release -- Sunday July 26th, 2009
Build a No-Kill Shelter! -- Sunday July 26th, 2009
The Waverly Humane Society is currently raising funds to build a full-service, No-Kill, animal shelter in Bremer County!
Bremer County does not currently have an animal shelter and there is not a No-Kill shelter in Black Hawk, Bremer, or any of the nearby counties. Organizers plan to provide a full-service SPCA style shelter where both the animals and community can take advantage of a variety of services.
Plans include providing not only the basic shelter services but many others like low-cost veterinary care, adoption, grooming, pet supplies, and a multitude of educational opportunities. Learning opportunities for animal-lovers, care-givers, and owners in northeast Iowa would include informational literature, hands-on training in animal behavior, behavior modification, agility, canine obedience, trap-neuter-relese, disease control, neo-natal pet care, and other companion animal issues. As well as information and referrals to licensed, area veterinarians and other educational institutions offering animal-related sciences.
Not only would the new facility be a place where people can adopt an animal, but find a way to help animals find good, quality homes without the fear of them being "put to sleep".
"If enough money is raised and everything goes as planned, It won't be your 'typical animal shelter'", says Michelle Larson, director of TigeraCat Rescues, inc. of Waterloo, "We want it to be a place where the entire community can come together to save animals in the most humane ways possible. We need to stop the killing!"
The Waverly Humane Society, TigeraCat Rescues, and many other area rescuers have had to turn away hundreds of animals this year due to lack of a place to keep them. The Cedar Bend Humane Society has been forced to either turn-away or euthanize even more animals than usual, due to lack of space. Our community desperately needs another shelter. Preferably a "No-Kill" shelter where euthanasia isn't used because there's no room for the animals!
"We've located a property at 2206 E. Bremer Ave., Waverly, IA that has great potential for the new shelter. And there are 3 neighboring lots that would be great space to use for exercise areas, and/or future expansion. The building is listed at $150,000 and the lots at $25,000 each. These properties could serve the community for many, many years!" says Priscilla Blanchard, director of the Waverly Humane Society, "We just pray the property isn't sold before we're able to raise the needed funds".
This is an excellent opportunity for northeastern Iowa communities to join together to SAVE ANIMALS! But, a shelter can not be built without the support of the community!
TigeraCat Rescues, inc. and the Waverly Humane Society believe this shelter is desperately needed and are accepting donations to make it happen!

Volunteers -- Wednesday July 22nd, 2009
The Waverly Humane Society is looking for reliable volunteers to come once a day to check on and clean up kittens and cats while I am on a short vacation. If we still have dogs, I will need someone (or several people) who can either come to the shelter 3 times a day to walk dogs or have a dog over at your house for a slumber party while I am gone. We are planning to leave next Monday (July 27) and return by the following Friday.
Please contact me ASAP if you are able to volunteer in this capacity.
We would like to give a HUGE Thank You to James Christoffersen for his generous memorial donation!
Thanks also go out to Linda for her fantastic sewing abilities, her crocheting of cat toys and for her help in general!
Thanks to whomever dropped off bags of cans (returnables) on the driveway and blankets in the garage!
Thanks also go to the two families who donated their outdoor kennels to the Waverly Humane Society!
We welcome your donations of items, money, time, whatever you have to share with us.
Don't forget to check the clearance aisles of your favorite stores, they often have pet food, collars, bowls, etc. We are always in need of Cat Collars (with quick release buckle) and we seem to always be short on bowls for food and water!
Check the website for our wish list!
Thanks!!
